Sources of magnesium can be found in many types of food, in water and rehydration drinks too. Fortunately, by ensuring a varied diet and proper hydration, niedobory magnezu should not occur. However, care should be taken with the aspects mentioned.
Sources of magnesium include cereals, legumes, nuts, rennet cheeses, bananas, cocoa, dark chocolate and certain vegetables - especially green leafy vegetables. In addition to food products, magnesium is an electrolyte, is also found in water and rehydration drinks such as hypo- and isotonic drinks. The bioavailability of magnesium is also important, at around 50%. The absorption of this component may be hindered by the presence of phosphates and phytic acid.
The magnesium requirement for men is 400-420 mg and for women 310-320 mg (at the RDA level - Recommended Daily Allowance). Although magnesium is commonly found in food, it is estimated that more than 90% of Poles and 70% of Polish women consume not enough magnesium with their diet. Magnesium deficiencies are mainly:
- cardiovascular and neuromuscular disorders,
- increased risk of osteoporosis, insulin resistance, hypertension, stroke, type II diabetes and cancer,
- general weakness, depression, drowsiness,
- lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting.
Excessive intake of magnesium can in turn have laxative and dehydrating properties and can cause sleep disturbances, muscle weakness and confusion.
The intake of magnesium at the correct level is essential for the smooth and trouble-free functioning of everyone's daily and working life.
