HID-RATION

Often during periods of higher temperatures or in hot microclimates, employers, in order to meet their regulatory obligations or in order to improve working conditions and comfort, provide employees with ready-made sports drinks in PET bottles. This, unfortunately, involves the problem of managing a large amount of extra plastic packaging in the company.

How, through a small change, we helped a client reduce the 'production' of additional plastic waste from 1,300 kg to 150 kg!

Reducing plastic waste is becoming a significant part of the #ESG strategy in many companies, and plastic beverage bottles for employees are one component of this issue.

And how did we, through a small change in employee beverages, help the customer reduce the "production" of this plastic from 1300 kg to 150 kg? And that was only in a 4-month spring-summer period!

The company employs 650 production workers and during the 4-month spring/summer season, it additionally dispensed isotonic sports drinks in plastic bottles to them.

During this period, the following were issued: almost 52,000 units of 500ml bottles from beverage.

Assuming the weight of a PET bottle of this type of beverage, with cap - 25 g , in 4 months "produced" in the company was about 1300 kg plastic waste.

How was this reduced by as much as 1150 kg?

By introducing HID-RATION™ electrolytes for employees as a replacement for sports drinks in plastic bottles, we only need 2,600 packs to make the same amount of drink. Each of these weighs 17 g so the total weight of the packs of hypotonic used is approx. 45 kg!

In addition, each employee, for the summer season, received 2 pieces of a dedicated 500 ml bidon to freely use the water available from the dispensers and to prepare HID-RATION™ drinking electrolytes.

The total weight of the bidons is approximately 100 kg so including the electrolyte packs for HID-RATION™ employees gave this:

Reduction of up to 150 kg of the previous 1300 kg of plastic waste!

And the waste still has to be managed...

An additional issue is still the process of managing the resulting plastic waste. Their storage or transport to the disposal site. This involves further costs and a significant increase in the carbon footprint.

Whole, uncrushed PET bottles often end up in the bins, which adds to the volume of waste, and, for example, a truck of around 10 cubic metres can carry as little as 200-300 kg!

In the case in question, that's almost 5 truckloads less waste!

Of course, the ideal situation would be to completely eliminate plastic from circulation, but this is not always possible if only because of economic factors. However, if a company dispenses sports drinks in plastic bottles, it is possible to reduce the amount of plastic significantly as in the case above. You can further reduce the amount of plastic by replacing reusable plastic bottles with e.g. metal or glass bottles, where production processes allow.

But how to fulfil the regulatory obligation to dispense vitamin- and mineral-enriched drinks to employees?

Importantly, where there is an obligation to provide vitamin- and mineral-enriched drinks to employees when working in high temperatures, there is no need to buy ready-made drinks.

If employees have access to drinking water, the regulatory obligation will be met by issuing employees with an electrolyte supplement in the form of dissolvable tablets - such as HID-RATION™
